M50 Toll Exemptions

Certain vehicles and users are exempt from paying the M50 toll. Find out if you qualify for an exemption.

Who Is Exempt From the M50 Toll?

The M50 toll system recognises several categories of exempt vehicles. These exemptions are set by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and apply automatically in most cases, though some may require registration.

Automatic Exemption

Most exempt vehicles are automatically recognised by the system based on their registration. However, if you believe you qualify for an exemption and have received a toll charge, contact eFlow to resolve the issue.

Motorcycles

All motorcycles are exempt from the M50 toll. This exemption applies to all two-wheeled motor vehicles regardless of engine size or registration.

If you are riding a motorcycle and receive a toll notice, this may be due to a camera error capturing your registration incorrectly. Contact eFlow to have the charge removed.

Emergency Service Vehicles

Vehicles belonging to emergency services are exempt from toll charges when carrying out their duties. This includes:

  • An Garda Siochana: All police vehicles
  • Ambulance Service: HSE and private ambulances responding to emergencies
  • Fire Brigade: Fire service vehicles from all local authorities
  • Civil Defence: Vehicles used in civil defence operations

Defence Forces

Vehicles operated by the Irish Defence Forces are exempt from the M50 toll. This includes Army, Naval Service, and Air Corps vehicles when on official duty.

Vehicles Modified for Disabled Use

Vehicles that have been structurally modified to accommodate a disabled person are exempt from the toll. This exemption requires the vehicle to be registered with eFlow.

Registration Required

To claim the disability exemption, you must register your vehicle with eFlow. Simply having a disability parking permit is not sufficient; the vehicle must be structurally modified.

To register for disability exemption:

  • Contact eFlow customer service
  • Provide proof of vehicle modification
  • Your vehicle registration will be added to the exempt list

Local Authority Vehicles

Certain local authority vehicles operating within specific areas are exempt. This typically includes vehicles from:

  • Fingal County Council
  • South Dublin County Council
  • Dublin City Council
  • Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council

The exemption applies to vehicles used for local authority functions such as road maintenance, waste collection, and public services.

Other Exemptions

Additional categories that may be exempt include:

  • Vehicles in funeral processions (under certain conditions)
  • TII operational vehicles
  • eFlow service vehicles

Not Exempt: Common Misconceptions

Some vehicle types are commonly thought to be exempt but are not:

  • Electric vehicles: Not exempt from the toll
  • Hybrid vehicles: Not exempt from the toll
  • Vintage or classic cars: Not exempt from the toll
  • Public transport vehicles: Buses pay toll at the appropriate rate
  • Taxis: Not exempt from the toll
